What Actually Makes a Tool "Browser-Based"?

Almost every tool on comparison lists claims to work "in the browser." In practice, that claim covers two very different setups.

Server-relay tools route your screen through the provider's infrastructure before it reaches the other person. This is how Zoom, Google Meet, Teams, and most "browser-based" tools actually work — even when neither side installs anything. It's a solid, battle-tested architecture (it's what makes 500-person webinars possible), but it adds a hop: your data goes to a server, then back down to the viewer.

Peer-to-peer (P2P) tools use WebRTC — a set of APIs built into every modern browser — to open a direct connection between two browsers. No relay server sees your screen content. The trade-off is that P2P doesn't scale to hundreds of viewers the way a relay can, which is exactly why most large platforms don't use it for anything but the initial handshake.

Neither approach is "better" in the abstract. But if what you're comparing tools for is a quick 1:1 or small-group screen share, P2P gets you a direct, private connection with nothing in between — and it's the reason a handful of small, focused tools can legitimately promise zero setup on both sides, not just for the viewer.

That distinction is also where most comparison articles go quiet: they'll tell you a tool is "browser-based" without telling you whether that's true for the host, the viewer, or just marketing copy. It's an easy detail to gloss over, because from the outside a relay connection and a P2P connection look identical — same browser tab, same "Share your screen" prompt. The difference only shows up in three places: how long the setup takes for the host specifically (not just whoever's watching), whether your screen content ever leaves the two devices involved, and how the tool behaves once you add a fourth or fifth viewer. Zoom (Web Client)

Zoom's web client lets viewers join a meeting straight from the browser without installing the app — genuinely useful if you're on the receiving end of a link and don't want to download anything just to look at someone else's screen for five minutes. The catch is the host side: starting your own meeting from scratch in the browser is limited enough (no scheduling, weaker screen-share controls) that most hosts end up on the desktop app anyway, and free accounts cap group calls at 40 minutes. Good if the other side is already using Zoom and you just need to join; not the tool you reach for when you're the one who wants to share your screen in under a minute.

Google Meet

Meet is the most consistently browser-first of the big platforms — both hosting and joining work fully in the browser, with a generous free tier and no forced app installs. The friction is smaller but not zero: the host needs a Google account, and creating a fresh meeting still means navigating Google's meeting UI rather than a one-click share. If your team already lives in Google Workspace, Meet is a genuinely low-friction option.

Whereby

Whereby was built around the "no download" pitch early and does browser-only well for both host and viewer. Rooms are persistent (a nice touch — same link every time), but the free tier is thin, and calls with more than a couple of participants route through Whereby's SFU rather than a direct connection. Solid choice if you want a permanent meeting room link; overkill if you just need to show someone your screen once.

Screenleap

Screenleap is one of the closer competitors to a "just share your screen" tool: the host starts a session and gets a link/code, and viewers join with zero download or account. The free tier is workable for quick use (8 viewers, 40-minute sessions) but caps out fast if you need longer or larger sessions, and recording is a paid feature. Worth a look if your primary need is one-way screen broadcasting to a small group.

join.me

join.me positions itself as a lightweight meeting tool, and viewers can join without downloading anything. In practice, the host experience defaults to a desktop app, and the useful features (recording, larger participant counts) sit behind a paid plan. It's a reasonable choice if you're already paying for it as part of a broader toolset, less compelling as a dedicated screen-sharing pick.

Jitsi Meet

Jitsi is the honest open-source answer here: fully browser-based, no account required for either side, and completely free with no artificial limits — a real rarity on this list. The trade-off is that it's a full video-conferencing tool rather than a screen-sharing-first one, so the interface has more going on (chat, virtual backgrounds, breakout rooms) than you need for a quick share, and — like the other multi-participant tools — it runs through a relay (SFU) once more than two people join, not a direct P2P connection. You can also self-host it if you want full control over where the relay actually lives, which is more than most tools on this list offer at any price. If you want a free, no-nonsense meeting room and don't mind the extra UI, Jitsi is hard to beat on price.

CoScreen

CoScreen built a genuinely different pitch: real-time collaborative screen sharing for developer teams, with multiple cursors and shared control rather than just a one-way broadcast. It's worth mentioning here mainly because of a recent, verified development — CoScreen's own site confirms it is being shut down on July 31, 2026, with the product becoming inaccessible after that date. If you were relying on CoScreen for multi-cursor dev collaboration specifically, none of the tools in this list are a true feature-for-feature replacement — that's a narrower use case than general screen sharing. But if what you actually needed was "show my screen to someone without installing anything," CoScreen was never fully browser-based to begin with (it required a desktop app on both sides), so its shutdown is a good prompt to reconsider whether you needed the app at all.
